Debit Mode allows users to spend directly from their crypto balances. This case study explores how we introduced control and transparency without compromising the simplicity of a debit card.

01 — intro
Context & Challenge
The Nexo Card bridges digital assets and everyday payments. With the introduction of Debit Mode, users could spend directly from their crypto balances instead of using a credit line.
While this unlocked new flexibility, it also introduced new questions around control, predictability, and transparency at the moment of payment. The challenge was to design a debit experience that gave users clarity and control without sacrificing the simplicity expected from a traditional card.

03 — Designing the solution
debit mode
Control over spending
We introduced a clear overview of spendable assets, showing available balances per asset in both native units and the user’s display currency.
Users can adjust spending priority, include or exclude assets, and understand how balances are used through contextual guidance and interest nudges.
Debit and Credit modes are accessible directly from the card dashboard, making it easy to switch and always know which mode is active.

transaction enrichment
Transparency for every payment
To support trust beyond the moment of payment, transactions were enriched with linked records that show what happens behind the scenes – such as asset exchanges and internal transfers. This gives users clear visibility into how each payment was processed.
We also improved transaction clarity through spending categories, merchant logos, and simplified layouts, surfacing the most relevant details first – such as charged amount, payment currency, and cashback when applicable.
